See how our Olympic and Paralympic athletes did

Five Durham alumni and a graduating student competed in the 2024 OIympic and Paralympic Games in Paris over the summer.

We followed the progress of Lauren Irwin (women's rowing), Tess Howard and Fiona Crackles (women's hockey), Jack Waller and Ollie Payne (men's hockey) and Gemma Collis (wheelchair fencing) throughout the Games.

Friday 6 September: Women's Wheelchair Fencing

Gemma faced Ukraine's Yevheniia Breus in the second round of the épée repechage, losing 15-7. While her Paralympic journey ends here, we're very proud of her achievement.

Friday 6 September: Women's Wheelchair Fencing

In her quarter-finals match in the women's épée Gemma fought against Hungary's Amarilla Veres, losing 15-7. Her next match was repechage round 2.

Friday 6 September: Women's Wheelchair Fencing

Gemma competed in her first bout in the women's épée category A against Hungary's Zsuzsanna Krajnyak, winning 15-12. She progressed to the quarter-final.

Tuesday 3 September: Women's Wheelchair Fencing

In her third repechage fight, Gemma's faced France's Brianna Vide, losing 15-10. This ends her sabre journey but she returns in the épée on Friday 6 September.

Tuesday 3 September: Women's Wheelchair Fencing

A delayed second sabre repechage fight saw alumna Gemma square up against Hong Kong's Chui Yee Yu, winning 15-9.

Tuesday 3 September: Women's Wheelchair Fencing

Gemma's next bout saw her face Brazil's Carminha Oliveira, where she won 15-0. She progressed to the next round of sabre repechage matches.

Tuesday 3 September: Women's Wheelchair Fencing

Durham alumna Gemma Collis competed in the women's sabre category A. She lost 15-7 to Ukraine's Nataliia Morkvych, moving on to fight in the repechages later in the day.

Monday 5 August: Women's Hockey

Team GB women faced the Netherlands in the hockey quarter-finals, losing 3-1. They fought valiantly but the Netherlands proved too strong, ending their Olympic journey.

Sunday 4 August: Men's Hockey

Team GB men faced India in the hockey quarter-finals drawing 1-1, losing 4-2 on penalties. While their Olympic journey ends here we couldn't be prouder of Jack and Ollie.

Saturday 3 August: Women's Rowing

The Team GB women's eight competed in the finals. They won a bronze medal behind Romania and Canada!

Saturday 3 August: Women's Hockey

Team GB women faced Argentina in their fifth match, losing 3-0.

Friday 2 August: Men's Hockey

Team GB men faced Germany in their fifth match, losing 2-1.

Thursday 1 August: Women's Hockey

Team GB women faced the USA in their fourth match, winning 5-2. Tess Howard scored twice! They rise to fourth in their pool and qualify for the quarter-finals.

Thursday 1 August: Men's Hockey

Team GB men faced France in their fourth match, winning 2-1. They are second in their pool and qualify for the quarter-finals.

Wednesday 31 July: Women's Hockey

Team GB women faced South Africa in their third match, winning 2-1. They are fourth in their pool.

Tuesday 30 July: Men's Hockey

Team GB men faced the Netherlands in their third match, drawing 2-2. They are third in their pool.

Monday 29 July: Women's Hockey

Team GB women faced Australia in their second match, losing 4-0.

Monday 29 July: Women's Rowing

The Team GB women's eight, with Durham alumna Lauren Irwin in seat 5, took to the water to win their heats in a time of 6:16.20. They qualify for Final A on 3 August.

Sunday 28 July: Men's Hockey

Team GB men faced South Africa in their second match. The match was a draw 2-2.

Sunday 28 July: Women's Hockey

Team GB, featuring Durham alumnae Tess Howard and Fiona Crackles, faced Spain. The team lost 2-1.

Team GB, featuring Durham alumni Ollie Payne and Jack Waller, faced Spain in the first hockey match of the 2024 Olympics. The team won 4-0.
