Our students visited our partner university in Sweden for the first ever Durham-Uppsala Summer School, an exchange programme with a focus on sustainability.
Ten students and two members of staff from our Faculty of Arts and Humanities visited Uppsala from 3-9 June to take part in the Summer School, which builds on the strategic partnership between the two universities.
The Summer School focuses on sustainability and the environmental humanities for postgraduate students from Durham and Uppsala, to be held each summer for one week in Uppsala and one week in Durham.
Both Durham and Uppsala are ranked as top 30 global universities for sustainability, which has been a key focus of the partnership to date.
One of the distinguishing features of the Summer School is that students travel by train between Durham and Uppsala. While air travel is quicker and cheaper, train is less carbon intensive and allows students to make the journey part of the education. Some of the travel time was devoted to shared learning.
The trip follows a visit to Uppsala by a delegation from Durham in November 2023 to explore potential research and education collaborations between the two institutions. Both institutions agreed to renew the partnership for a further five years and identified several possibilities for collaboration on research and learning, including a joint Durham-Uppsala summer school.
