We recently welcomed Finland’s Ambassador to the UK to Durham where he learned about our excellence in health research.

During the visit, the Ambassador, His Excellency Jukka Siukosaari, met with our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen O’Brien, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global), Professor Claire O’Malley, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health), Professor Charlotte Clarke, and researchers from our Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing and our Institute of Medical Humanities

As part of our research engagement with Finland, he learned about our Institute of Medical Humanities’ involvement in an international multi-disciplinary project called “Counter-Narratives of Cancer: Shaping Narrative Agency’’. Led by the University of Turku, this project examines different ways of communicating about cancer.

He also heard about other pioneering initiatives including our researchers’ efforts in the fight against neglected tropical diseases.

The Ambassador participated in a panel discussion at the JusTN0W conference, a project led by an interdisciplinary group of our researchers who are committed to developing innovative solutions to address climate change.

Enhancing healthcare and research

The visit followed an introduction by Professor Richard Scothon, Chairman of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) and Professor in Practice at the University.

Our partnership with CDDFT aims to promote greater collaboration in healthcare and research in North East England.

This collaboration includes joint research projects, funding bids in areas that further both organisations’ research objectives, and professional development programmes for staff.
