Students wearing fashionable clothes

Our South College students took to the catwalk to raise over £9,000 for a Durham hospice.

The Compass Fashion Show has fundraised for St Cuthbert’s Hospice over the last three years, raising over £20,000 so far.

South College students fundraised at events before and during the evening of the fashion show, which saw students model clothes from St Cuthbert’s two charity shops in Durham.

As a partner charity for South College, students have also visited the Hospice itself to learn more about the vital care the charity provides.

Impactful fundraising

The theme of this year’s fashion show was ‘Modern Mythopoeia’, exploring the transient nature of contemporary life, rooted in the myths of Ovid’s metamorphoses.

Charis Omer and Jude Hobbs-Brake, organisers of the 2024 event, said: "Having been involved since Compass' inaugural year, it was so rewarding to see it all come together for a third year and for us to continue supporting St Cuthbert's Hospice.

“We believe that our involvement with the Hospice is so important, as not only does our fundraising have an impact, but it provides an opportunity for us to learn more about the amazing work St Cuthbert's Hospice does and helps to destigmatise palliative care.”

Calendar highlight

St Cuthbert’s Hospice Community Fundraiser Erin Wright said: “We can’t believe how well all of the students have done this year in their fundraising.

“The event has become a highlight in our calendar for the team to attend and say thank you to the students and staff of South College for all of their hard work.

“Whilst raising money for us, the students are also raising awareness of sustainable fashion by showcasing some of the amazing items we have for sale in our charity shops.”

Professor Tim Luckhurst, Principal of South College, added: "South College students are delighted to raise funds for St Cuthbert's.

“They recognise the value of the important work the hospice does, and they are proud to be able to help.”
