Durham is one of just two universities this year to exceed £100,000 in fundraising for Movember, meaning that the outstanding collaborative efforts of our Colleges and Team Durham clubs have secured the top spot on the Big Moustache on Campus Challenge UK leaderboard, raising an incredible £126,879.
Movember is a global initiative that raises awareness and funds for men’s health, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The movement has funded over 1,320 men’s health projects worldwide, challenging the status quo, reshaping men’s health research and transforming the way health services engage with, and support, men.
In addition to the fundraising, Team Durham worked hard to offer support and raise awareness on campus. Information booths were set up to highlight the resources and services available to our students, including the Chaplaincy Service, Student Support, and Nightline. These initiatives provided students with essential guidance and assistance throughout November.
Huge thanks go to all the clubs, Colleges, and individuals who contributed to this record-breaking achievement. The collective effort of our Durham community has demonstrated the power of teamwork in supporting such a worthwhile cause.
Our top fundraising contributors were Durham University Cricket Club with £27,731.55, followed by Collingwood College at £21,396.64, the University Rugby Club at £13,408.42, Grey College at £7541.92, and Hatfield College at £8,040.74. A total of 54 University and College sports clubs participated, showcasing the wide-reaching impact of this movement.
Above and beyond fundraising, Durham University Netball Club, in collaboration with Durham University Football Club, launched impactful media campaigns, hosted charity events and organised talks. Durham University Cricket Club also reached thousands of students with their mental health podcast series.
These efforts promoted Movember’s important message and raised awareness of men’s health issues, informing our wider community.
Congratulations to all those who contributed to making Movember 2024 a successful month for Durham University. Through the collective efforts, we’ve demonstrated compassion, raised awareness and shown our support and commitment to improving men’s health.
