Want to know more about how we interact with our local community? Our monthly Community Newsletter explores the news, events, and research both at Durham University and in the city itself.
In the newsletter we celebrate the launch of the £5 million Durham University Space Research Centre (SPARC). The Centre will support North East England’s growing space industry and lead on the sustainable exploration of the cosmos.
We're a key partner in a new drive to accelerate space innovation in our region. Launching in 2025, the North East Space Communications Accelerator (NESCA) will bring together North East England’s universities and space working groups, along with 14 industry partners.
We also highlight how we're supporting local charities through our Christmas Wish Tree campaign. We’re collecting physical gifts and online donations to support Durham Action on Single Housing (DASH), Feeding Families, and the Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre (RSACC).
Meanwhile, a student fashion show raised £9,000 for a Durhamhospice, Fiona Hill inspired students at North Durham Academy, four of our researchers travelled to Baku, Azerbaijan for COP29; and much more.
There’s plenty of events to enjoy in and around the University and Durham City this month and we spotlight some of these in the newsletter.
They include the yearly Jazzy Christmas charity gig featuring Durham University Big Band and Durham University Jazz Orchestra.
Also, this month Durham University Classical Theatre performs Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus: The Musical.
Our staff continue to conduct impactful research. A team from our Archaeology department used images from the declassified satellites to identify what they believe to be the location of the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah.
Researchers from our top-rated Psychology department have discovered that social bonding behaviours in chimpanzees can spread through groups much like contagious yawns or laughter in humans.
And a team of astrophysicists from our Institute for Computational Cosmology has brought us one step closer to answering the question: Are we alone?
