Conference delegates hearing from His Excellency Jasem al-Budaiwi

The Secretary General of the Gulf Co-operation Council was the keynote speaker at our Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies’ (IMEIS) annual conference.

In a plenary speech, His Excellency Jasem al-Budaiwi re-emphasised the Gulf Co-operation Council’s (GCC) unwavering commitment to peace and, having identified climate change as the most significant challenge of our time, set out the GCC’s work on leading transformation towards a more sustainable world.

Mr al-Budaiwi called for united efforts and open-mindedness to confront global challenges, concluding that only through collective collaboration can we achieve peace and shape a better future.

He also discussed the GCC’s history with the UK and its work in action, including their active role in negotiating trade agreements such as those with Pakistan.

During his first visit to Durham, Mr al-Budaiwi and his colleagues also met with University leaders, students, and visited Durham Cathedral and St Mary’s College.

Honouring Professor Anoush Ehteshami

The conference honoured the work and career of Professor Anoush Ehteshami, part of IMEIS and our School of Government and International Affairs.

Opening the event, Professor Clive Jones, Director of IMEIS, paid tribute to Professor Ehteshami’s distinguished work and contributions. Mr al-Budaiwi also commended his instrumental leadership and dedication.

The annual event, which includes The Sir William Luce Fellowship Lecture and The Muhamed Ali Fellowship Presentations, took place at our Al Qasimi Building.

It was attended by distinguished guests, including His Excellency Bader Al-Munaikh, Kuwaiti Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

His Excellency was accompanied by Dr Tahani Al-Terkait, a Durham alumnus and serving Kuwaiti diplomat now attached to the GCC.
