Durham Law School has strengthened its global alumni network. During a recent visit, Professor Karen O’Brien, Vice-Chancellor and Warden, announced the creation of the Hong Kong Chapter of the Durham Law School Alumni Association.
The Chapter will be led by The Honourable Mr Justice Andrew Macrae JA as its first President. He is joined by Founding Members Stephen Weatherseed, Robin Egerton, Kapil Kirpalani, and Cordelia Yeung - each a distinguished Durham graduate.
Established in September 2024, the Durham Law School Alumni Association was founded under a constitution signed by Joint Presidents Lady Black of Derwent and Lord Hughes of Ombersley, Professor Karen O’Brien, and Professor Volker Roeben, Dean of the Law School.
Since then, the Association has grown to more than 800 members worldwide. The Association exists to build strong connections between Durham Law School, its students, and alumni who have established careers in law.
It promotes active engagement from the judiciary and legal practitioners in education and research, while offering mentoring and practical experience to students preparing for legal careers.
It also creates valuable networking opportunities - both in the UK and through international chapters. Through these efforts, the Association strengthens the Law School community worldwide.
The Hong Kong Chapter marks the Association’s first overseas branch. The official launch will take place on Thursday, 5 February 2026, at a reception hosted by Slaughter and May in Hong Kong.
The launch of a first overseas chapter for our Law School alumni association reflects the strength of our global community and our shared commitment to advancing legal education and practice worldwide.
Many of us cannot forget our time at Durham. I am grateful and excited about the Hong Kong Chapter - a milestone for the Law School and the University
I would like to thank David Patient, Chair of the Executive Committee, and Philip Bennett, our first Professor in Practice, for their hard work in establishing the Hong Kong Chapter. Special thanks also to Slaughter and May for graciously agreeing to host the launch event.
