Our connection with Indonesia was further strengthened at a recent engagement with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, HE President Prabowo Subianto in London.
Durham was one of 25 universities at the meeting, hosted by Sir Steve Smith, the International Education Champion for UK and Scott McDonald, CEO of the British Council.
Also present was the Indonesian ambassador to the UK, Desra Percaya, a Durham University graduate and honorary graduate.
Durham was represented at the meeting by Terry Toney, a member of University Council, our governing body.
The President spoke about how education, science and technology are very important for the future development plans of Indonesia.
The UK’s new International Education Strategy features Indonesia as a priority.
Durham has a growing Indonesian student body. We have been working closely with Indonesian partners for many years. Joint research projects include improving health impacts of volcanic ash and working around challenges in managing flooding.
Recently our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen O’Brien, accepted an award in recognition of an exceptional contribution to strengthening and deepening the UK-Indonesia relationship at the Indonesian embassy.
We look forward to continuing close working with Indonesia, to the benefit of our students, our researchers and the development of both our countries.
