Following the release of the 2026 New Year Honours, we congratulate our alumni and friends who have been recognised for their exceptional contributions.
Their accomplishments reflect the strength and global reach of our community. We celebrate their achievements and their enduring connection to Durham University.
Among the recipients is alumna and broadcaster Gabby Logan, who has been awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting and charity. Gabby studied Law at Durham and remains a committed supporter of the University, particularly the College of St Hild & St Bede. Her connection with Durham was further recognised when she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University in 2015.

While she successfully completed her studies, it was her wider experiences at Durham that helped shape her future career. It was during her time as a student that Gabby began her journey in broadcasting, working part-time at Metro Radio in Newcastle. She has frequently spoken of her affection for Durham, the University, the City and the North East, and of the vital role her college played in encouraging her involvement in sport and cultural activities. Experiences that helped develop the skills that have proved invaluable throughout her career.
Also recognised are Professor Dave Roberts and Professor Colm O’Cofaigh from Durham’s Department of Geography, who have each been awarded Polar Medals for their outstanding achievements in polar research.
