Circularity – re-using end-of-life materials or rekindling utility and value from wastes - is sustainability’s holy grail. Yet materials seldom move in ways imagined by circularity models. The ambition of the Circulatory Materials project is to mine this gap - between what circularity is imagined to be and trajectories of materials in practice - for an extended interdisciplinary conversation about the potential and limits of circularity as an aspirational, ethical and practical framework.

We are writing to invite you to an IAS workshop - Invitations to Circularity – which will be held on Tuesday 8th December from 1-3.30pm (Seminar Room, Institute of Advanced Study, Cosin's Hall, Palace Green).

The workshop is a precursor to the Circulatory Materials project which launches in Epiphany Term. The aim of the workshop is to understand some of the ways in which DU colleagues are thinking about questions of circularity across the physical and social sciences, engineering and humanities.

In this opening workshop, the project investigators, Professor Gavin Bridge (Geography) and Professor Chris Greenwell (Earth Sciences) will provide a brief overview of the Circulatory Materials project, offer some initial ‘provocations,’ and invite participants to speak for 5-10 minutes about the material (and immaterial) contexts in which they consider questions of circularity. They encourage participants to bring an object, graphic or other artefact through which they access circularity as a problem, promise, or solution.

Please register your interest to attend with either of project investigators (see contact details below):
