The development of social media, and more recently AI, present challenges for the consumer in distinguishing between truth and ‘fake news’. Truth becomes more questioned, opinions more polarised, experts become less trusted, and long-held scientific truths begin to be questioned. How do these challenges impact journalism?

In a year when many leading democracies across the world head into crucial elections, it becomes more critical than ever for the public to have trust in journalism and understand the ‘truth’ they consume.

This joint event co-hosted by the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) and South College, Durham University, will consider these challenges through bringing together academics and journalists to address:

  • Is there a role for press regulation?
  • How do democracies adapt in a post-truth world?
  • How do scientists communicate their findings when basic principles are questioned?

  • Monica Grady CBE (Professor of Planetary and Space Science, The Open University)

  • Helen Fenwick (Professor of Law, Durham Law School, Durham University)

  • Kim Fletcher (Editor of British Journalism Review, former editor of The Independent on Sunday, Editorial director of Telegraph Group Limited, and author of The Journalist’s Handbook)

  • Bridget Kendall (former BBC diplomatic correspondent, and recently Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge)

  • Ian O'Flynn (Professor of Political Theory, Newcastle University)
