The construction sector is undergoing rapid transformation through the increasing adoption of AI, digital twins, BIM, robotics, XR and other emerging technologies. At the same time, organisations face growing expectations to improve sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and wider societal value. However, digital transformation does not automatically lead to more sustainable or responsible outcomes.
This seminar explores the intersection between CSR and digital transformation and considers how their integration can contribute to the evolution of smart buildings and Construction 5.0. Drawing on research across CSR, digital transformation and Construction 4.0/5.0, it examines how emerging technologies can strengthen organisational responsibility, stakeholder engagement, sustainability performance and decision-making, while also creating new governance, ethical and organisational challenges.
Dr Qian Zhang is an Assistant Professor in Engineering Management at Durham University, Director of the Responsible Transitions Lab, and a Fellow of the Durham Energy Institute. With over a decade of international research and project experience across China, Australia and the UK, her work sits at the intersection of engineering and project management, sustainability and digital transformation, with a particular focus on digital sustainability and responsibility in the context of Industry 4.0/5.0.
