Professor Jon Gluyas presented Lifetime Achievement Award at national geothermal conference
The National Geothermal Centre is delighted that Professor Jon Gluyas, NGC Founder Member and one of the UK’s leading figures in geoenergy, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the REA’s UK Geothermal Conference, Galvanising Geothermal – Delivering Demand, in London on Tuesday 13 October.
The award recognises a remarkable career spanning industry, academia, research, innovation and public engagement. Jon has made major contributions across geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage and the wider geoenergy sector, while also playing an important role in developing the people, organisations and ideas that are helping shape the energy transition.
His career has included senior leadership roles at Durham University, such as DEI's director and chairing the British Geological Survey and leading professional bodies, alongside an extensive record of research, innovation and company creation. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers plus five books, and has consistently championed the use of subsurface science to tackle some of society’s biggest energy challenges.
Jon has also been instrumental in the development of the UK geothermal sector and is a co-founded the National Geothermal Centre. His contribution goes far beyond his research and formal roles; generations of students, researchers, colleagues and industry professionals have benefited from his enthusiasm, knowledge and willingness to support others.
Charlotte Adams, CEO of the National Geothermal Centre and DEI Co-Director, said: “Jon’s contribution over many decades has been extraordinary. What stands out just as much as the scale of his achievements is the number of people he has positively influenced along the way. He has an exceptional ability to share his knowledge and enthusiasm, and however busy he is, he always seems to make time to help, encourage and support other people.
“I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Jon for nearly 20 years and have seen first-hand the impact he has had across academia, industry and the geothermal community. This Lifetime Achievement Award is hugely well deserved and a very fitting recognition of everything he has achieved – and continues to contribute.”
The award was presented as part of a conference focused on how the UK can move geothermal from potential towards delivery. The event also explored how geothermal can contribute to low-carbon heating and cooling, energy security, regional economic growth and clean power.
Everyone at DEI congratulates Jon on this richly deserved recognition.
