Welcome to GCRF

This new, exciting and innovative centre is funded by Durham University for three years 2019-2021.

The Centre currently consists of a single cohort of 25 international PhD students, all citizens of a developing nation.
About Us
The ground floor corridor of the Palatine Centre

Each student is undertaking a three year fully-funded PhD programme designed to identify steps towards a solution to a specific global challenge aligned with one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The students are all supervised by a multidisciplinary team of academic staff reflecting the complex and wide-ranging nature of these global challenges. The students will each undertake a funded placement at a partner university in a developing nation to give them greater insight into the context of the challenge they are researching. The students will benefit from Durham’s research training programme, support from the Durham Centre for Academic Development and a bespoke programme of events designed for this cohort. This exciting initiative is one of a small number of Global Challenges training centres in the UK. The university believes that this Centre will act as a model for others to adopt in future.

As you explore the web pages further, you will get a sense of this centre's breadth, scope, and ambition. We are training leaders of the future who will learn from their research, learn from their experiences and learn from each other how to make a real, substantive and lasting difference to the world in which we all live.
