[05/26] Landslides and risk management at the centre of Guzzetti’s lecture at the Accademia dei Lincei, in Rome, Italy.
Professor Fausto Guzzetti, of Durham University’s Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience, was invited to deliver a lecture entitled “Frane, frane, ancora frane. Cosa fare?” (“Landslides, Landslides, and More Landslides: What Should We Do?”) as part of the Letture Corsiniane series. The event took place at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome on 3 May 2026.
In his talk, Professor Guzzetti discussed current knowledge of landslides and their impacts in Italy – the European country with the highest number of documented landslides and the largest associated human toll. He also addressed key challenges and outlined priorities for both scientists and decision-makers to improve the understanding, assessment, and management of landslide risk. Professor Guzzetti concluded by reflecting on why natural hazards, including landslides, are particularly difficult to manage in Italy.
The lecture was followed by an engaging discussion with the audience, which included geologists, geomorphologists, numerical modellers, engineers, anthropologists, civil protection experts, and concerned citizens.
