Speaker Series
Speakers from around the world join us to advance and disseminate knowledge of political phenomena. The Speaker Series is an important element of our strategy to build the international reputation of the Centre and contribute to the School’s research culture.
The Speaker Series runs in two formats. The first is a traditional seminar, consisting of a presentation followed by a Q&A session. The second is an innovative flipped workshop format, in which a member of staff who proposed the speaker presents their own work in progress, followed by the external speaker’s presentation. Each contribution is followed by comments from a discussant and a structured, constructive feedback session, designed to support speakers in developing their research projects.
The Speaker Series Convener for 2025-26 is Dr Aung Hein, Durham University.

The NERD is co-organised by the Centre for Institutions and Political Behavior at Durham University and School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology at Newcastle University.
The NERD group meets three to four times during term time to discuss working papers, research projects, grant proposals, and PhD dissertation chapters. Meetings are organised around draft papers circulated in advance, and sessions are dedicated to constructive discussion on how to strengthen the work, particularly in terms of theoretical framing, research design, and empirical analysis.
