Sir Harry Evans Photojournalism Fellowship
The Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship in Photojournalism is a prestigious international programme delivered by Durham University in partnership with Reuters and The Globe and Mail. It is designed to give an outstanding early-career freelance photojournalist the “gift of time” through a year-long fellowship that combines mentorship, financial support, and access to major international newsrooms to carry out an ambitious long-form project.
A central element of the Fellowship is its rigorous nomination and selection process, which is tailored specifically to identify exceptional freelance photojournalists at a formative stage in their careers. Candidates are nominated through a combination of industry referrals and recommendations from leading editors and practitioners in global journalism. The process places strong emphasis not only on technical excellence and visual storytelling, but also on originality of vision, ethical practice, and the potential impact of the proposed project. Shortlisted nominees are invited to further develop their ideas before final selection by a panel comprising representatives from Durham University, Reuters, and The Globe and Mail.
This is the launch year of the Fellowship, marking an important milestone in supporting independent photojournalism at a global level.
Through this Fellowship, Durham University and its partners aim to honour the legacy of Sir Harry Evans by investing in the next generation of visual storytellers -those committed to illuminating underreported issues and producing work of lasting public value.
