Biography

Professor Carolyn Summerbell joined Durham University in 2008, originally to work in the Department of Medicine and Health. She joined the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences in 2017. She is a nutritionist and qualified dietitian and was trained at KCL. Prior to working at Durham she worked at Teesside (latterly as Director of Research in the School of Health), UCL (as Lecturer in Systematic Reviewing) and QMUL (as Lecturer in Nutrition). She has successfully supervised 24 PhD students to completion.

Carolyn’s research has been supported by a range of funders, including the NIHR, MRC, and European Commission. She has many significant international collaborations including academics from the European, Eastern Mediterranean and Western Pacific regions. She works with national and global NGOs, such a NICE, Cochrane Equity Methods Group and WHO, to support their tool development and guidance. She is committed to public/patient involvement in her research and, in turn, the translation and dissemination of her research findings to public/patient engagement and communication outputs. These outputs include policy briefings, research briefings, toolkits, podcasts, animations and infographics. Examples relating to two projects can be found here and here.

The reach of Carolyn’s research can be evidenced from here from her Scopus citation index (70) and extensive range of international co-authors. She is regularly invited to deliver international keynotes and invited talks. The impact of Carolyn’s research can be found in her Impact case study which was included in the Department’s REF 2021 submission.

Research interests

Carolyn’s primary research interests lie in the domain of physical activity (+/- diet) interventions in children which aim to prevent obesity, promote healthy growth and reduce inequity.

Although some of this work is focussed on the UK, specific projects in high, low and middle-income countries, including Sweden, Malaysia and Qatar, form part of this portfolio of research. Her research focuses on three main areas:

1. The collation of evidence of the effectiveness of interventions that aim to promote physical activity (+/- healthy diet), prevent obesity and promote healthy growth, and promote equity in children. Methods and types of evidence used vary – from Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis methods to novel scoping review methods, and from grey literature and information to unpublished data on equity factors collected by trialists.

2. The development and translation of community-based interventions to promote physical activity (+/- healthy diet), prevent obesity and promote healthy growth, and promote equity in children, for high, low and middle-income countries. Frameworks (e.g. the ADAPT guidance), alongside mixed and creative methods that value meaningful involvement of children, teachers and parents, steer this work.

3. Exploring the relationship between physical activity and dietary patterns in preschool and young children to better understand interactions and how these may be moderated by equity factors and child growth. An emerging line of enquiry explores the time points (age of children) of deviance from physical activity and dietary recommendations and policy implications.
