Maizatul Farisah is a law lecturer from Malaysia and currently teaches at The Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) and currently visiting academic at the Durham Law School, Durham University for a period of 5 months starting 1st August 2023 to 31st December 2023. She is also a visiting scholar at School of Law, University of Sheffield, Leicester Law School, University of Leicester, and the Brunel Law School, Brunel University, London. 

Her interest in medical law and medical ethics began when she joined a research group conducting research on Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) in 2007 as a research assistant who explored the implication of the use of ART from a legal perspective. She further developed her knowledge in medical law when she read Medical Law and wrote a Master’s thesis on the topic of Medical Law. She has continued her interest in medical law and specialised in medical negligence for her PhD. She also explored new areas in the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in resolving disputes in medical negligence claims and proposed in detail the use of ADR (mediation and arbitration under the administration of a court) for medical negligence claims. She is also a member of organizations related to medical law such as The Medical Law Institute (Turkey) and Medico-Legal Society of Malaysia. 

Maizatul have been involved in research since 2007 including Assisted Reproduction Technology, Corporate Governance, multi-disciplinary research on West Asian countries, and the eCourt System in Malaysia. She has published since 2008 with journal articles including in high impact journals in WOS and SCOPUS, chapters in books, books, proceedings and talks in seminar and conferences as an invited speaker in her areas of expertise in medical law and ethics as well as in ADR in Malaysia and overseas. She has wide experience of teaching law and supervises undergraduate students in their final year projects at Faculty of Medicines and Health Sciences for Medical Law course. Since 2007, he has taught Evidence Law, Medical Law, Introduction to Law and Law and Society, and also taught in topics such as Tort, Contract, Constitutional law, Criminal Law, Consumer Law, Criminal Behaviour, and ADR (civil and Syriah).

Previously she completed my PhD at Brunel University London in 2017 under sponsorship of Malaysian government (MARA) in relating to medical negligence claims and the proposal to use alternative dispute resolution and a master’s in law (LLM) in 2009 under sponsorship of Malaysian state (Yayasan Pahang) on ethico-legal study on inhalant abuse. Maizatul also has extensive experience of general legal matters and contract law especially in drafting agreements and other legal instruments as a former Legal Officer in University of Malaya. She was admitted to the Bar as an advocate and solicitor in 2007 after 9 months of chambering and success in her Bar Exam in 2007. 

Current Research

Dr Farisah's chosen topic during this visit is ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medicine: Opportunities, Challenges, Ethics, Fiqh and Legal Consideration’. Her primary research interest is in the area of medical law. After researching different areas that related to medical law including ADR, she is keen to explore new areas that are outside the medico-legal area. Therefore, she did some research on the developments in the medical field that involves technology specifically relating to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to see what the implications there are from a legal and ethical as well as fiqhperspective.

She also a leader for on-going research grants relating to Syariah ADR at the Syariah Court in Malaysia and members of research grant on electronic informed consent in Malaysia. Besides that, she is also involved in Cyber Security System Group Research with other researchers at her university in Malaysia. Furthermore, she is currently involved in new research at her Centre relating to the metaverse and with a focus on regulatory measures and ethico-legal considerations.
