Biography

Scarlet joined Durham University in 2023 and are currently working with Dr Caroline Dodd-Reynolds on an SPHR funded research project ‘Physical activity insecurity’ as experienced by LGBTQ+ children and young people living with deprivation: what would safe spaces for physical activity look like for this community?

They have two decades of experience of working as a community-based facilitator, researcher, and solidarity activist in the field of social and environmental justice, with a keen interest in post-oppositional approaches to coalition building.

As a facilitator and researcher, they host diverse groups of people to come together to grow collective awareness and agency to better work collaboratively across complex rank and power dynamics and to establish shared outcomes.

In 2019 they completed a Masters Human Geography (Society and Space) at the University of Bristol, with the thesis Dancing with Defensiveness: Geographies of emotions using movement improvisation Research Interests.

Their research interests are:

• Embodied, creative and participatory research practices

• Decolonisation, intersectionality, and power

• Politics of nature and ecology

They are interested in how the affective and more-than-human worlds both can inhibit and support us to overcome intersectional inequalities and work towards more co-liberatory processes. Their artistic practice informs their approach to research.

They recently worked with a conservation and nature engagement organisation, using an action-research approach, to help develop their capacities for working collaboratively and inclusively to reduce barriers.
