Enrolling and registering as a Durham student
Enrolling and registering as a Durham student - Undergraduates
To become a fully registered Durham student, you'll need to complete our Enrolment and Registration process. There are three parts to Enrolment and Registration:
- Enrolment: Update or confirm your personal information and accept the University's regulations. All students must complete enrolment each year.
- Registration: Select modules, confirm your college, and provide financial information. All students must complete college details and financial information each year.
- Identity Verification: If you are starting a new course, you need to provide evidence of your identity. This is typically done at your college on arrival in Durham. Students complete this once for their course.
The first two steps are completed in Banner Self-Service, and this can be accessed once you’ve set up your University IT account.
More information on each of these steps can be found below.
Right to Study check – for International Students
International students may need their VISA and passport checked by our University Immigration Service to complete their Right to Study check. This is a separate process to Identity Verification and must be completed to become a registered student with Durham University. Once you've enrolled with the University, you'll be able to access information about the Right to Study check.
Setting up your University IT account
Your University IT account gives you access to all our IT systems and services – including Banner Self-Service which you’ll need for enrolment and registration.
Your username and password
Once you’ve completed your Offer Acceptance Form, and we’ve confirmed your College allocation, you’ll receive a series of emails (24 hours apart) with your Durham IT username (this will be four characters plus two numbers, e.g. 'abcd12') and temporary password, along with enrolment and registration guidance.
These emails will be sent from no.reply@durham.ac.uk to the personal email you provided on your UCAS application. Please make sure you check your junk or spam folder. If you use iCloud, you may need to open the email in a web browser to view it properly.
When your temporary password arrives, please change your password as soon as possible - it must be at least 12 characters long. You’ll also need to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using SMS codes to keep your account secure.
During busy periods, particularly after A-Level Results Day, it may take a couple of weeks for your college allocation to be confirmed, so please be patient.
Please note: the login details for your University IT account are different from the User ID and PIN you used to access the UG Applicant Portal.
Enrolling with the University
Once you’ve set up your University IT account, you can complete Enrolment and Registration.
Enrolment consists of providing personal details and address information, as well as accepting the University's regulations, and uploading a photo for your campus card.
Enrolment is completed within Banner Self-Service.
It will be useful to have the following information to hand:
- Your term-time address and telephone details.
- Emergency contact details.
- Information on how you will be paying your tuition fees, including sponsor details where applicable.
- A photograph of yourself (Find out more about uploading a photograph for your campus card below.)
Once you’ve completed all sections, please ensure the ‘confirm enrolment’ at the bottom of the page is clicked. If you encounter any issues during enrolment please get in touch.
It is essential you complete Enrolment as soon as possible, or there may be an impact on the following:
- Accessing your University email.
- Getting a campus card
- Accessing learning resources
- Accessing your Department's Welcome and Orientation pages
- Printing Council Tax Exemption letters
- Printing bank letters.
Uploading your photograph
As part of your enrolment you will need to upload a photograph of yourself. This will be used on your Campus Card for the duration of your studies.
Your photograph needs to be in the following format:
- 198 wide x 239 high (pixels).
- File Type JPEG (.jpg file extension).
- The picture should be clear and in focus.
- Head and shoulders passport style picture on a plain white background.
- A picture of you looking straight at the camera (eyes open, no sunglasses or tinted lenses).
- Your face should not be obstructed by a hat or other items of clothing.
- You should not wear clothing of similar colour to the background.
Completing registration
You must also complete registration within Banner Self-Service. There are three elements to registration.
1. Selecting your optional modules – after 1 September
Undergraduate students need to be registered for 120 credits of modules in each year of study. Many programmes have 'core' modules, which must be studied by all students on that programme. If the 'core' modules on your programme total less than 120 credits, then you'll need to select 'optional' modules.
All students are automatically registered onto the core modules for their programme each year. If you do not see your core modules, please let us know.
From the 1 September, you can register for your optional modules.
Before doing this, you should read the module selection information that your Department have shared in their Induction site on Blackboard. If you have queries about selecting your optional modules after the 1 September, please contact your Department.
Once selected, your module choices will be sent to your department for approval. Please allow time for your modules to be approved.
Please select your optional modules by 24 September.
To complete Module Selection you need to:
- Log into Banner Self-Service.
- Choose the 'Registration and Enrolment' option.
- Select 'Academic Year 2026/27' and click 'continue'.
- Choose the 'Programme and Module Registration' option.
- Any 'core' modules will already be registered for you.
- Click 'Add Another Module'.
- Select the Department owning the module you wish to study and click 'Search Module List'.
- Select the module you'd like to study and click 'Add Selected Module'.
- Once your 'core' and 'optional' modules total 120 credits, click 'Submit'.
- Any 'optional' modules will need to be approved by the owning Department. If your request isn't approved, you'll receive an email to let you know.
If you’re interested in learning a language, Durham University's Centre for Foreign Language Study (CFLS) offers a wide range of credit-bearing language modules and extracurricular language courses open to students across the university.
Please note that many modules have pre-requisite requirements, and you won't be approved for the module unless you meet these. For example, to study Economics of Sustainability (ECON1051), you will need an A-grade or higher in A-Level Mathematics. To study a module from outside your Department, it will need to be an 'open' module. You can read the module outlines for all our Level 1 'open' modules. You will only be able to select modules that are compatible in the timetable.
2. Confirming your College details
On this screen, you will be prompted to confirm your college details are correct. If they are correct, press submit and this step will be complete. If you believe the college details shown are incorrect, please let us know.
3. Completing your financial information
This is where you will inform the University of how your fees are to be paid.
Please fill in all mandatory fields marked with a red * and anything else that applies to you. For any queries regarding your fees or if you are unable to complete this page, please contact get in touch.
Verifying your Identity
When you arrive in Durham, you'll need to verify your identity with your College. Even if you aren't going to be living in your College, you will need to verify your identity there to get your campus card. We accept the following documents as proof of identity:
- Current Passport
- Current UK Driving Licence
- Current Biometric Residence Permit.
If you are a UK student and you do not have any of these forms of identification, we will accept your original Birth Certificate.
Please note: the name on your proof of identity must match the name on your campus card. Your full legal name is required for your degree certificate. If you go by a different name this can be entered under ‘Preferred Name’ during enrolment.
If you need to open a bank account or apply for Council Tax exemption, you can print off the required letters in Banner Self-Service, once you've completed Enrolment and Registration.
