Travelling to Durham

By Rail 

Durham is served by direct trains from London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and most other major UK cities. The journey can take less than three hours from London, one-and-a-half hours from Edinburgh, and forty-five minutes from York. The College is approximately 30 minutes’ walk from the train station or, alternatively, you may wish to take a taxi from the taxi rank at the station.

By Bus 

There are several express coach services daily from most major cities. It should take approximately 30 minutes to walk from the bus stop on North Road to Collingwood College. 

By Air 

The nearest airports are Newcastle upon Tyne andTeesside International Airport. Newcastle airport is linked to Durham by rail and Metro

By Car 

From the North or South (A1M): Use the postcode DH1 3LT, if using Satnav. Exit at Junction 62 (to Durham City). You will travel down a dual carriageway for 1.5 miles. At the roundabout, go straight ahead towards the City Centre. You will then go down a hill. Use the left-hand lane and take the first exit at the lights. At the next set of lights use the right-hand lane to go straight on. You will then come to a fork in the road, take the right-hand fork and follow this road to the crossroads. Go straight ahead at the crossroad and then drive up the hill and look for the third turn on your left, this will take you to Collingwood College. Once you turn left off the main road, immediately turn right and you will see car parking on the left or further up on the right.

Car Parking

Parking at Collingwood College is very limited. For delegates arriving by car, you can park at Howlands Park and Ride facility for the duration of the conference. In order to do so, you must purchase a bus ticket each day you are parked there. Bus tickets cost £2. You will also need to display a notice in your car, which we will provide. Howlands Park and Ride is just a short, 10-minute walk from Collingwood College. To receive a copy of the parking notice to display in your car, email us at teacher.engagement@durham.ac.uk 

Collingwood College also has a small amount of parking which is available on a first-come-first-served basis. If you park at Collingwood, you will need to leave your registration details with reception upon arrival.

It is advisable to arrive early if travelling by car. 

Guest Information

Check in and out: Registration will take place between 10:00 and 10:45 on 4 January. Check in is unlikely to be available until later in the day, but Collingwood College will securely store your luggage when required. Check out will take place before the first session on 5 January.

What to bring: 

Your accommodation will be at Collingwood College. This will be an ensuite single room. The college provides essential toiletries (shampoo, shower gel and soap) and towels.

There is no set dress code for the conference. However, we recommend that you bring comfortable shoes and warm, shower-proof clothing as some sessions will require up to 20 minutes’ walk from the main conference venue.
