EcoCampus is the environmental management scheme for higher and further education. The EcoCampus Scheme develops, implements and maintains our environmental management system in line with the international management system standard, ISO14001. We achieved the Platinum Eco Campus Award in May 2025.
The University takes pride in gaining external recognition for its environmental behaviour. Below are a few examples of where initiatives and practices at the University have been externally recognised and/or rewarded.

'Nature Positive' category Highly Commended in the International Green Gown Awards (October 2024).
County Durham Environment Awards (February 2025) winner of 'Nature in Places and Spaces' for 'Enhancing Biodiversity for All; Winner of Sustainable Built Environment' for 'Decarbonisation at James Barbour House'; Winner of 'Environmental Community Action' for 'MammalWeb Citizen Science programme for wildlife monitoring'; and Highly Commended for 'Green Business' category for the Housekeeping team's Odorbac initiative to reduce the environmental impact of cleaning.
