Thank you to Prof Stephen Willis and Kieran Lawrence, Department of Bioscience at Durham University, for this great image. This stunning woodcock, a forest-nesting, nocturnal wader, turned up outside of Biosciences earlier in the week.

Prof Willis told us: 

‘it is likely to be a bird that has flown over from the continent to escape to the mild weather of the UK’
