Why are balsam bashes important?
Himalayan Balsam was introduced to Britain by Victorian plant hunters. It soon escaped from collections and established in the British countryside where it now dominates wetland, scrubland and woodland habitats, crowding out all native species which are vital for pollinators.
It is found throughout the woodlands of the Durham University estate where its seed is spread for miles on the River Wear.
That’s why we actively engage in its control. And we couldn’t do this without the support of our staff and student volunteers.
See you there!
