Waste Management
We are committed to reducing, reusing and recycling all purchased goods as we move towards a more circular approach to resource use. Across the University we have a range of initiatives and schemes to help reduce our waste footprint as much as possible, from re-usable cups to an online marketplace for office furniture, we are leaving no stone unturned.
At Durham, we recognise that waste is not just about throwing things away, but also how we purchase things. That’s why our waste and procurement teams work closely to ensure we are procuring in a sustainable way, to help minimise the amount of waste we produce.
All this work is tracked and progressed through a variety of working groups including the Sustainable Procurement working group, the Single Use Plastics working group, and our Environmental Sustainability Strategic Planning Group, details can be found here.
We cover some of our ambitions with waste in our Sustainability Ambition Statement, including our ambitious target of recycling 70% of our waste by 2042, and we are well on our way.
