I was awarded a place in the Civil Engineering Department in 1957 on the basis of a 4 year course because I had not passed Maths at A level but had 4 other A levels in Physics, Chemistry, Applied Maths and Engineering Drawing with an O level pass in Maths. A very interesting feature of Professor Cassie's attitude was his willingness to accept non conventional entrants such as those with HNC. I found this a good thing as it brought a more mature and practical orientation.

The first year involved the takeover of Freeman Road Hostel from the MPNI to become Eustace Percy Hall. An interesting year during which I was fortunate enough to be one of the JCR committee and have an input to the future furnishings of the Hall. For the year we had no heating in the rooms, desk or comfortable chair. I in put the boxwood double wardrobe on its side and used it as a desk.

Conditions were much improved in the 2nd year with heating to the rooms, desks, comfortable chair for reading and proper wardrobes.The food was very good with formal dinners once a week. We had a number of social events inviting local further education colleges and ladies Halls.Eustace Percy was male only.

I was fortunate enough to get a place in the University Air Squadron and thoroughly enjoyed learning to fly from Ouston airfield.In some ways my love of flying was detrimental to my civil engineering course resulting in my failing some of the exams necessary to enter the final year in 1960. However after spending 2 years out working with the Mersey River Board and attending Salford CA , I passed the necessary exams and returned to complete the final honours year in Hydrology and Hydraulics under the guidance of Vin College. A very useful contact, as he moved to the then newly formed Water Recourses Board in Reading. Vin was very helpful in providing funds for an experimental catchment on the Lleyn Peninsula which I set while working with the Gwynedd River Authority.

Overall my experience at Kings exceeded expectations and gave me a chance to fulfil my dream. I found all the staff interested and helpful with Professor Cassie an inspiration.
