Student Opportunities Fund 

Creating Opportunities. Removing Barriers. Changing Lives. 

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and supporters, the Student Opportunities Fund (SOF) continues to help Durham students access transformative opportunities and overcome financial barriers when they arise. 

Since 1998, the fund has supported students through extracurricular activities, research expeditions, employability opportunities and hardship assistance. During the 2025/26 academic year alone, donor support helped 247 students across the University.

Supporting Students in Many Different Ways 

The SOF helps students access opportunities that enrich their university experience while also providing vital support when unexpected financial challenges arise. 

Employability Opportunities 

Through the SOF, students can access funding for internships, work experience, recruitment events and other career development opportunities by contributing towards travel, clothing and associated costs. In 25/26 more than 100 awards were to support students like Anna and Niamh.

Arts and Personal Development 

By providing grants to enable students to pursue interests in music, theatre and art, the SOF supports students to develop skills, confidence and creativity.  

In 25/26 alumni donations funded activities including: 

• Purchase of instruments 

• Durham University Light Opera Group’s annual production  

• Durham University Concert Band attendance at the National Concert Band Festival.  

47 awards were made to students and groups like Durham University Light Opera Group.

Hardship and Essential Support 

For students facing financial difficulties, the SOF provides vital assistance through several hardship schemes, helping students remain focused on their studies and wellbeing.  

In 25/26, 129 awards were made to students in the form of: 

• Support with essential living costs 

• Assistance with costs related to studying 

• Instant access emergency support including supermarket vouchers.
