Abstract
Despite living in a digitally connected world, loneliness and social isolation remain pressing issues in many developed countries. Could our consumer attitudes be influencing how we connect with others? In this talk, I will present key findings from my past and ongoing research on the relationship between materialistic values and social well-being, defined by meaningful interpersonal connections and a sense of belonging. I will begin by discussing insights from a recent meta-analysis on this link, followed by a second study that explores the cognitive mechanisms driving these effects. Finally, I will introduce my current projects, which examine cross-cultural differences in how materialistic individuals are perceived and the broader implications of social network on the endorsement of materialistic values.
About the speaker
I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Marketing and Strategy at Cardiff Business School.
My research examines consumer attitudes and behaviours and their impact on individual well-being and interpersonal relationships using quantitative methods (cross-sectional and experimental designs) and advanced statistics (meta-analyses, SEM). Through research, education, and public engagement, I seek to challenge consumer culture and overconsumption patterns and promote more mindful and sustainable living that fosters well-being and social connections.
Before my academic career, I worked as a Marketing Manager at Hewlett-Packard. Additionally, while pursuing my studies, I worked in direct marketing for renowned brands like Samsung and Kodak and was a communication assistant at a United Nations conference.
