Collingwood alumnus Andrew Byrne returns to share insights into careers in finance
23 October 2026
Collingwood welcomed back alumnus Andrew Byrne (Geology, 2003) on Thursday 22 October for a lively evening exploring careers in finance. It was co-hosted with the Collingwood College Finance Society.
His talk 'Everything you wanted to know about Finance but were afraid to ask' attracted a large and highly engaged audience to the Penthouse Rooms with students taking the opportunity to ask questions and hear first-hand advice about entering the industry. After graduating from Durham, Andrew qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC before moving into investment banking with Goldman Sachs and Barclays. Now based in Boston, he invests in commodities and mining companies for Wellington Management, one of the world’s largest asset managers.
Andrew reflected on his journey from studying Geology at Durham to building an international career in finance, sharing practical advice and emphasising the importance of remaining authentic and staying true to personal values. A networking drinks reception followed, giving students further opportunities to continue the conversation.
Professor Thom Brooks, Principal of Collingwood College, said: 'We were delighted to welcome Andrew back to Collingwood. The students absolutely loved the evening and their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions made for a wonderful discussion. We are hugely grateful to Andrew for giving his time so generously and sharing his experience with the next generation'. Our thanks to Andrew and the Collingwood College Finance Society for a thoroughly enjoyable and informative evening.
