The forces of Durham University’s Orchestral and Choral Societies will come together to present Verdi’s mighty Requiem in Durham Cathedral this January.
With over 250 musicians and conducted by the celebrated Tim Burke (Musical Director of the Royal Northern Sinfonia Chorus and Tête à Tête Opera), this performance promises to be a true highlight of the musical year. The evening opens with the Orchestral Society performing the overture to Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie, setting a dramatic tone with its exuberance and verve.
Attention then turns to the centrepiece of the evening. Verdi opens with the solemn murmur of "Requiem aeternam", whispered by the choir, before erupting into the fury and thunder of the "Dies irae" and the powerful “Offertorium". The Sanctus bursts forth with joy and excitement, before the haunting beauty of the "Agnus Dei", and culminating in the ever-famous "Libera me", which brings emotional and musical resolution to this monumental work and tumultous journey. With distinguished alumni soloists and the finest musical talent from across Durham University, this evening promises to be truly unforgettable for all.
