Our fundamental purpose is to develop and cultivate an interest in Computer Science. To help schools encourage their pupils in the study of Computer Science we offer a range of outreach activities for groups of students or individuals.

We enjoy hosting visits from schools throughout the UK and regularly visit schools within the region. Some of our undergraduates also carry out school placements as part of their study.

As a department, we support Celebrate Science a university festival that runs during the October half-term holiday. We are also involved in Durham University Schools' Science Festival that takes place over Easter and is aimed at students in Years 9 and 10. At these events, we aim to give pupils the chance to develop their skills in a dynamic setting.

We offer residential summer schools for sixth form pupils who want to get a flavour of our subjects:

• Supported Progression - offers local students from a wide variety of backgrounds a taster day during the Easter break plus a five-day residential summer school.
• Sutton Trust Summer Schools - run for a week during the summer for students who have completed Year 12. They offer a week of diverse academic and social activities and aim to provide a glimpse of university life.
