GO Study Abroad
Studying abroad offers a unique opportunity to explore and experience a different part of the world, and to expand your education within, and beyond, Geography. Through Durham University’s Overseas Exchange Programme, our geography students can study at partner institutions around the world, from North and South America, to Asia, Europe, and Australasia.
We have partnered with world-leading Geography departments to offer students opportunities to further their education in diverse and internationally-excellent settings. Studying abroad offers a chance to develop employability skills and experience, and is a valuable means to explore new ideas, perspectives, and issues.
Studying abroad may seem daunting, however, there is a range of support available. These include:
- Funding opportunities
- Languages courses with the Centre for Foreign Language Study
- Pre- and in-placement support for widening access students and students with extra needs.
Go Study Abroad
At the heart of Durham’s global student outlook are our GO (Global Opportunities) Study Abroad programmes. These range in length from summer schools to a full Year Abroad at a partner university. Find out more here.
GO Shorter
We offer shorter opportunities for students who may not want to or be able to spend a full year abroad. These include internships, volunteering and summer schools ranging from a few weeks to a few months in length. Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible to apply for funding support.
How and when?
For the full GO Study Abroad year, students undertake a year overseas between their second and third year, build research experience, and take diverse courses selected to develop geographical knowledge and expertise. Students are supported throughout the year by both the International Office and the Geography Department’s Exchange Coordinator.
GO Study Abroad is a competitive, university-wide scheme, run through the International Office.
Applications are submitted during your second year and successful candidates will then return to Durham to complete their final year of studies.
Florence Russell (2020)
"It sounds so cliché, but studying abroad changed me for the better. I was able to explore a new city, find new friends (as well as stay in touch with my old ones), and take some really unique and interesting modules. Taking a year abroad was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made."
Lucy Ross-Skinner (2020)
"Having the opportunity to take modules outside of my course broadened my knowledge and made my experience more diverse. The modules I chose were related to Human Geography but approached issues from alternative perspectives, which enabled me to write diverse essays when I came back to Durham."
Placements
You may also want to consider the opportunity to do a placement year which can provide you with relevant work experience, professional network expansion and the discovery of a new city or country whilst receiving a salary.
