Professor Bohlander Addresses Media Reporting About SETI and UAP Research
29 April 2026
Professor Bohlander criticises biased media reporting on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) and Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP)
In a letter to the Guardian published today, Professor Michael Bohlander - the Law School's Chair in Global Law and SETI Policy - criticised biased and superficial reporting about SETI and UAP research. Joined by two other highly critical letters, he argued that anything less than academically rigorous investigation of the entire field should be considered to be a thing of the past.
Referencing the international Symposium "Grounding the SETI and UAP Debate" held at Durham Law School on 24 April 2025, as well as recent publications in generalist peer-reviewed journals such as Global Policy and World Futures, he pointed to the fact that global policy developments present ample evidence that governments and mainstream academia are now taking the topic very seriously.
