Professor Thom Brooks, Professor of Law, Ethics and Government at Durham Law School, has been interviewed by Solicitors Journal about his work connecting legal and political philosophy with practical law reform.
In the interview, Professor Brooks discusses citizenship and immigration policy, reform of the Life in the UK test, and the need for a more coherent approach to sentencing. Drawing on his experience of advising government and giving evidence to Parliament, he also reflects on how academics can turn compelling ideas into workable public policy.
Professor Brooks, a former Dean of Durham Law School and now Principal of Collingwood College, also considers the changing legal profession. He argues that intellectual curiosity, sound legal judgement and the ability to use artificial intelligence responsibly will be increasingly important for law students and early-career solicitors.
