The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is deeply saddened to announce the death of Daniel Newman, Professor of Arabic Studies, following a period of illness.
Daniel joined the School as Senior Lecturer in Arabic in 2005. Over the next twenty years, he proved a mainstay of Arabic Studies, particularly at postgraduate level, being quickly promoted to professor and serving for several years as Head of Arabic. He also played a full part in the wider academic community, most notably as a long-standing member of the Council of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) and Vice-President of the British Association of Teachers of Arabic (BATA).
A specialist in Middle Eastern literature, culture and translation, and a leading scholar on the Arab Renaissance, Daniel had most recently gained wide recognition for his work on medieval Arabic food, reflected in two books, The Sultan’s Feast (2020) and The Exile’s Cookbook (2023), and his blog, www.eatlikeasultan.com.
Daniel's loss is felt deeply across the School, and we share our sadness with his family, friends and academic colleagues.
