MUSICONversations is a new series of music appreciation evenings in which members of Durham’s renowned Music Department introduce music they love and would like to share with a wider audience. They will give a short introduction before playing a recording of the music, followed by time for reflection and conversation. No special musical knowledge is necessary to enjoy a MUSICONversation - we invite you to come and explore something new in the company of an expert guide.
Joe Bates writes: "The legendary synthesiser composer Wendy Carlos has resisted all efforts to digitise her music. With her CDs now out of production, few now have the chance to hear her ground-breaking music. In this session, we will listen to her 1986 release Beauty In The Beast, on which Carlos first used her novel tuning systems, the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma scales. Carlos’s experiments in tuning are of especial interest to me, as my research focuses on how new approaches to intonation can make render the familiar strange."
