Angus celebrating with internal examiner Dr Amanda Hsieh (left), and PhD supervisors Professor Julian Horton and Dr Katherine Hambridge (right)

We are delighted to congratulate Dr Angus Howie on the successful defence of his doctoral thesis, Symphonic Legacies: Brahms, Bruckner, and Mahler in Vienna, 1911–1945. Angus passed his viva with flying colours earlier this spring.

His work explores the Viennese critical reception of the symphonies of Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, and Gustav Mahler between 1911 and 1945, arguing that the reception of Brahms, Bruckner, and Mahler serve to demonstrate developments in Viennese culture more broadly, such as tourism, modernisation, and the radio

The viva examination was conducted by Dr Amanda Hsieh (Durham University) and Professor Benjamin M. Korstvedt (Clark University). Angus was supervised by Professor Julian Horton and Dr Katherine Hambridge.
