CfAI Seminar: Sustainable physics: From accelerators to the wider research community
Sustainable physics: From accelerators to the wider research community
This is an Internal (non-public) event but all University staff and students are welcome.
Physics research can have a multitude of effects on society, the economy, and the environment. With the growing climate crisis, many research fields have been taking strides towards more sustainable research practise with varying levels of complexity and impact.
Accelerator physics provides a particularly interesting case study for this challenge. Efforts to improve the sustainability of accelerator research have been gaining momentum, particularly alongside proposals for the next generation of major scientific facilities in the UK and internationally. At the same time, many of the challenges faced by accelerator physics are shared across high-energy physics, astronomy, and the wider research community.
Drawing primarily on examples from accelerator physics, whilst considering approaches from across physics and beyond, this talk will explore tangible efforts, tools, and strategies for making research more environmentally sustainable. It will consider what existing initiatives can teach us, how approaches developed in one area might translate to others, and where there are opportunities to embed environmental sustainability more broadly into the way we conduct scientific research.
