Durham University has announced the appointment of renowned physicist Professor Mark Leake as Chair of Natural Philosophy, effective 1st October 2026.

Professor Leake will hold a joint position between the Department of Biosciences and the Department of Physics, reflecting the University’s commitment to interdisciplinary research at the interface of the physical and life sciences. He will also serve as Director of the Durham Biophysical Sciences Institute (BSI). In this capacity, he will lead the Institute to deliver our vision as a flagship centre for cutting-edge biophysical research and innovation.

Professor Leake joins Durham from the University of York, where he has built an international reputation for pioneering work in single-molecule biophysics and advanced microscopy. His research focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms of life at the molecular level, with applications spanning health, biotechnology, and synthetic biology.

The appointment marks a significant step in Durham’s ambition as a global leader in interdisciplinary science. By bridging expertise across departments, the BSI fosters collaboration, attract world-class researchers, and deliver transformative scientific discoveries.

Professor Mark Leake said: “I am delighted to be joining Durham University at such an exciting time. The opportunity to work across both Biosciences and Physics, and to lead the Biophysical Sciences Institute, is particularly compelling. Biophysics sits at the heart of some of the most important scientific challenges of our time, from understanding disease mechanisms to developing new technologies. I look forward to working with colleagues across the University to build a vibrant, collaborative research environment and to help position Durham as a global hub for biophysical science.”

Professor Clive Roberts, Executive Dean for the Faculty of Science, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Professor Leake to Durham. His appointment represents a major investment in interdisciplinary science and aligns with our strategic vision to bring together diverse expertise to tackle complex global challenges. Mark’s leadership, scientific excellence, and experience in building collaborative research programmes will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our research portfolio and enhance our international reputation.”

Professor Sarah Hainsworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), added: “The appointment of Professor Leake and his leadership of the Biophysical Sciences Institute signals our ambition to grow research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. The BSI has enormous potential to become a flagship institute for Durham, driving innovation, attracting external investment, and delivering impact across multiple sectors. We are excited to support Mark in realising this vision.”

Professor Leake’s arrival is expected to catalyse new partnerships both within Durham and with external collaborators, including industry and international research organisations. The University anticipates that under his direction, the BSI will accelerate its  central role in advancing discovery-led science while contributing to real-world solutions in health, sustainability, and technology.
