Professor Stuart Adams of the Quantum Light and Matter (QLM) group at Durham Physics was the recipient of the 2020 Holweck prize, which is awarded by the French Physical Society and the Institute Of Physics. This is recognition of his pioneering work on Quantum optics.

Unfortunately, owing to travel restrictions at the time, Prof. Adams was not able to attend a ceremony in Paris. Prof. Antoine Browaeys (Institut d’Optique, Paris) was recently in Durham delivering the Rochester lecture, and he was able to present Prof. Adams with his medal and certificate.

Professor Ifan Hughes, Head of QLM, commented: “It was a great honour for us that Prof. Browaeys could come to Durham, and as a representative of the French Physical Society hand over the certificate and medal.  Prof. Adams has been a pioneer in the field of Quantum optics for two decades, and this international recognition is thoroughly deserved.”

Professor Paula Chadwick, Head of Durham Physics, commented: “We are delighted that Stuart has been recognised with the Holweck Prize. His innovative work on quantum optics with Rydberg atoms represents a major advance in the expanding field of quantum science and highlights the world-class research being carried out by the QLM group.”
