This talk presents a process-oriented developmental model of the emergence of reflective emotion regulation across childhood. The model conceptualizes emotion regulation as unfolding in three subsequent steps—emotional awareness, evaluation, and regulation—each supported by distinct but interrelated competencies. Early in development, caregivers scaffold these processes through co-awareness, co-evaluation, and co-regulation, facilitating a gradual transition to self-regulation. The talk reviews initial empirical support and discusses key directions for future research, including culture-sensitive extensions of positive development models.
