Congratulations! Welcome to Durham's Department of Theology and Religion

We are delighted that you have chosen to study here and hope that your time in Durham will be challenging, fulfilling, and will prepare you well for your chosen career and for life ahead.

Theology and Religion at Durham has a long and prestigious history. Once an established centre of excellence in traditional Christian theology, Durham’s Department has both expanded and enhanced its academic life in recent decades. We pursue research and education in 3 main areas of scholarship: Biblical Studies, Christian Theology and the Study of Religion, spanning historical, philosophical and social scientific approaches to theological and religious phenomena. All of our undergraduates have the opportunity to take modules across these areas and to specialise in particular fields of interest as they progress through their degree. Our academic staff are passionate about the subject and bring their cutting edge research into the classroom, enabling students to engage with challenging questions that are shaping our discipline as well as shaping the lives of people across the world today.

The Department of Theology and Religion is also distinguished by its collegial culture. We support one another and pride ourselves on maintaining an educational experience that is inclusive and affirming for all concerned. We see ourselves as a community of scholars, and our undergraduate students are an essential part of this community. We’re delighted you’re joining us and look forward to learning with you during the years ahead.

I wish you all the very best for your time at Durham.

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
