Jewel of the North art installation in the Norman Chapel of Durham Castle

'Jewel of the North' brings to life the original medieval imagery and carvings in the Norman Chapel, the oldest part of the Castle.

The exhibition has been created by award winning sound and list artists Ross Ashton and Karen Monid of The Projections Studio, in collaboration with experts from Durham University. It makes innovative use of the chapel's architecture, illuminating the distinct carvings including the famous mermaid along with recordings to connect audiences with music and voices from the past.

Visitors can see 'Jewel of the North' as part of a Durham Castle guided tour. Book a tour online or at Palace Green Library.
