Mark Hillery Music Studios

The Music Studios feature two Practice Rooms and a state-of-the-art suite of recording spaces. The Recording Suite is a writing, tracking and mixing space comprising a generously proportioned Vocal Booth which has been acoustically treated to act as a very dead sounding space, a gear-packed Control Room and a beautiful Live Room with an oak floor and a suspended ceiling of acoustic clouds. For even more flexibility, the Practice Rooms can be linked to the Control Room using the building’s audio network.

Professor Joe Elliott, Principal of Collingwood College said: “One of this country's leading music producers has described our studio as "probably one of the top ten in the UK". We hope that this outstanding facility will attract aspirational students to Durham University and enable and inspire them to develop high level skills in music production and recording.”

Collingwood student, Tamsin Matthewman said, "Being the Studio JCR Committee Chair this year has been incredibly rewarding. Not only did I have the amazing opportunity to learn how all the recording equipment works and run sessions with some exceptionally talented students, but I also had the privilege of teaching fellow JCR members what I've learned. The Studio has become a fantastic space for students to create music, and I'm thrilled to have played a role in fostering such a creative and supportive community."

GSS Architecture

A student playng pianoGSS is one of the longest established architectural practices in the UK. They worked with us on this new building, adopting a sustainable approach to the design, including photo-voltaic panels.

The practice has also worked with Collingwood on a multi-use games area, theatre and new student common room. They were also architects on the conservation of Bishop Cosin’s Library, as well as works across Palace Green Library and Durham Castle.
