Northern Lights A Cappella is named second in the world, representing the UK for the fourth time in a row at the highest level of student A Cappella.

The 16-strong ensemble took to the stage for a show‑stopping performance on Broadway that showcased a confident, polished set, earning praise from judges and audience alike. They were also the recipients of two special awards:

  • Outstanding Arrangement - Aman Krishna (Northern Lights’ vice-president and treasurer) for ‘Skyfall’.
  • Outstanding Choreography – Bede Capstick and Joe Butler-Smith (Northern Lights’ two choreographers) for the group’s entire set.

Northern Lights competed in the 2026 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) against nine of the strongest groups from across the United States and Canada. They were again the only UK group to feature in the ICCA world finals, having consistently qualified since 2023.

The ICCA and the International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) are the only global tournaments that showcase the art of student A Cappella.  The ICCA is the competition that features in the ‘Pitch Perfect’ movies.

Flying the flag for the UK

The competition’s five judges praised the group for their vocal precision, musicality, and dynamic choreography, with particular recognition for the originality of their performance. Their set was entirely arranged and choreographed in-house, continuing the group’s long-standing tradition of creative independence and musical innovation.

“When Northern Lights took to the stage a hush of anticipation fell across the auditorium, it was clear the audience knew to expect something special from ‘The Brits’.

“The performance was flawless, with perfect arrangements, intonation, harmonies and choreography. The transitions between numbers brought a riotous response and the feel-good number perfectly contrasted with the more serious moments.” Dr Nicola Candlish, Senior Manager (Performing Arts)

Not just the ICCA

Northern Lights’ ICCA performance is the culmination of a sparkling season. Between winning the UK finals of the ICCA, and the New York international finals, they were placed first in the national Open A Cappella competition in London. They were also awarded ‘Exceptional Choreography’ for the entire set. This is the third time the group has won this competition.

More recently, they were the recipients of a Contemporary A Cappella Award (CARA) for ‘Best European EP’ for their 2025 ICCA set ‘Dreamcatcher’.

Powered by generations of talent and support

Northern Lights is expertly supported by a dedicated University Performing Arts staff team as part of a vibrant community of over 65 student music and theatre groups. The team encourages students to explore their interests, from performance opportunities, to hands-on technical experience, no matter whether students participate with serious career aims, or simply for the joy of performing.

As well as establishing structure and strategy for performing arts groups, the team creates opportunities, and mentors student leaders to develop real-world skills. This includes managing a performing group, encompassing artistic ambition, logistics, budgets, people management and more, while balancing the academic demands of their degrees.

A further part of Northern Lights’ success can be attributed to the ethos, dedication, and determination established by former members. Thirteen years of student leadership has provided the group with unshakeable musical arrangement and performance skills, as well as close-knit community.

Northern Lights’ alumni network often offers mentorship, coaching and creative support to current members. Many of them continue to sing after graduation, as shown when a group of Northern Lights alumni, now performing as The Menagerie Club, appeared on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent last month, garnering praise from judge Amanda Holden for ‘out of this world’ singing.

Northern Lights’ next major concert is ‘Masquerade’ on Friday 12 June where they will perform in Durham Cathedral alongside our other talented student music societies. They are also busily preparing sets for this year’s Durham Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe in July and August.
