Durham physicist Professor Valery Khoze has been elected to the Academia Europaea, one of Europe’s most prestigious academic bodies. The honour recognises his outstanding contributions to theoretical particle physics and his international standing as a leading figure in the field.

Founded in 1988, the Academia Europaea brings together excellence from across the humanities, social sciences, law, economics, mathematics, medicine and the natural and technological sciences.

Election is by peer review and reflects both academic distinction and sustained impact.

Advancing our understanding of the Universe

Professor Khoze’s research has played a significant role in shaping modern particle physics, particularly in quantum field theory, quantum chromodynamics, Higgs physics and high‑energy particle interactions.

His work has helped to deepen understanding of the fundamental forces and particles that make up the Universe.

A defining feature of his research is its ability to connect advanced theoretical developments with experimentally testable predictions, helping to bridge the gap between theory and observation.

His contributions to multiparticle dynamics, as well as studies of the Higgs boson and the top quark, have been central to interpreting data from major international experiments. This includes work carried out at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.

Through this work, Professor Khoze has helped advance the global scientific effort to understand matter at its most fundamental level.

International collaboration and leadership

Alongside his research, Professor Khoze has been deeply involved in international scientific collaboration, working with physicists around the world at the cutting edge of theoretical and experimental discovery.

His work has strengthened collaboration across institutions and disciplines, contributing to a vibrant and interconnected research community.

Professor Khoze is also widely recognised for his commitment to mentoring early‑career researchers and for his broader contributions to academic life, helping to nurture the next generation of scientists.

Professor Khoze’s election to the Academia Europaea is a well deserved recognition of his outstanding contributions to theoretical physics and his international reputation as a leading researcher in the field. His work continues to shape our understanding of particle physics and inspires collaboration across the global scientific community.
