Dr Alan Real

Dr Alan Real, Director of our Advanced Research Computing has been named in the inaugural SCW75 list, which celebrates some of the world’s leading figures in scientific computing.

International recognition

The new recognition programme, launched by Scientific Computing World, highlights 75 people helping to shape the future of advanced computing in research, engineering and innovation.

Alan was recognised for his work in developing the digital infrastructure that supports modern scientific research.

His work helps researchers across a wide range of subjects including physics, engineering and data science to use powerful computing systems to tackle complex problems.

Advanced computing

At Durham, Alan leads the University’s strategy for advanced research computing, helping ensure researchers have access to the technology and support they need as artificial intelligence and data-driven science continue to grow.

His work has helped expand our capabilities in high-performance computing, cloud services and research data infrastructure.

These systems allow researchers to process and analyse large amounts of information more quickly and efficiently.

Alan has also played a key role in national research collaborations, including the N8 Centre for Computationally Intensive Research and the EPSRC Tier-2 Bede supercomputing service.

Alan was the project lead for N8’s AI4Science Project.

Alongside this, he has helped develop Durham HPC Days, an annual event now in its fourth year that brings together researchers, developers and industry experts to explore new developments in high-performance computing and scientific innovation.

Shaping scientific discovery

Speaking about the launch of the SCW75 programme, editors at Scientific Computing World said the list recognises people who are helping turn major investment in computing technology into real scientific progress.

The programme highlights the growing importance of advanced computing across many sectors, including life sciences, engineering and artificial intelligence.

Dr Alan Real, said: “It’s an honour to be recognised as part of the inaugural SCW75. My work in Durham draws together the great diversity of strength of talent across the organisation, positioning us as a key centre for supercomputing Nationally.

“Our environment, that allows us to innovate and nurture the next generation of digital research infrastructure professionals, will ensure our continued shared success across research and innovation communities.”
