A special Durham Cathedral service and Durham Castle reception have been held to celebrate the appointment of our alumnus Dr Arnab Basu MBE as High Sheriff of County Durham.
Dr Basu (Physics, Ustinov College, 1999-2003) co-founded the Durham spinout Kromek Group in 2003, and continues to lead it as CEO. He is also a Professor in Practice at our Business School.
He is currently serving as High Sheriff of the County Palatine of Durham for the 2026/27 civic year, and a Durham Cathedral Matins service and Durham Castle reception was held on Sunday 12 July.
Among the guests were Mike Butterwick CBE, Lord Lieutenant of County Durham; Lord Sumption, a former Supreme Court judge; and, representing the University, Professor Claire O’Malley, our Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global).
Lucian Hudson, our Executive Director, Communications and External Relations, hosted the Durham Castle reception.
Dr Basu thanked the Cathedral and the University for their support, reflected on the changing role of the High Sheriff, and made clear the priority he will give during his year in office of championing young people.
The role of High Sheriffs in England and Wales dates back more than 1,000 years. In County Durham, the High Sheriff was part of the administration of the powerful Prince Bishops.
Reflecting that “ancient institutions only endure if they evolve”, Dr Basu spoke about his role in recognising voluntary service, helping prevent crime, and championing communities.
Young people would be at the heart of his year, he said, and highlighted inequalities of opportunity. The event heard from youth and education policy consultant Rylie Sweeney, and young people Ruby Hardy and Alfie Johnson, who are involved with the County Durham-based children’s rights charity Investing in Children.
